Luxury Island Resort, Desroches, Seychelles
The desert island of Desroches lies some 250 miles south east of the main Seychelles Island Mahe and is reached in around 30 minutes by private aircraft. The island is approximately 5 kms long by about 1 km wide at its widest point and boasts 14 km of almost unbroken white powder soft beaches and so it is entirely possible to spend the whole day without seeing another soul.
Although Desroches Island is a small island in the middle of a very big ocean there is just so much space here and so few people that feels at times as though you are the only ones on the island.
Desroches Island is an "All Inclusive" single hotel island with just 20 Junior Suites set amongst tropical gardens, palm trees and green lawns. The rooms are set equally either side of the main hotel complex - pool, restaurant and bar- and are a mere 25 uninterrupted paces back from the high water mark.
The rooms are extensively equipped having king sized draped bed, outside shower and all the usual trappings that you would realistically expect. Outside, each suite makes use of the islands natural vegetation to screen its own balcony and private garden from neighbouring suites all of which in turn open directly onto their very own stretch of beach.
At the time Marsha and I visited Desroches Island (March 2009) a further group of four bedroomed Family Villas on the other side of the island were nicely coming on stream. These Family Villas have their own infinity swimming pool, living room, dining room, FOUR Double bedrooms, fully equipped family kitchen and Butler Service - guests / residents can choose to live in their villa or make use of the resorts dining facilities. Meals can be served in the villas at a surcharge. Children and families are very welcome on Desroches Island.
Family Villas have the use of their own electric "golf" buggy whereas Junior Suite guests have a bicycle for the duration of their stay, although where necessary the resort can assist less able guests with a buggy "taxi" service.
Dining on Desroches Island is something that is taken very seriously with two formal restaurants and several informal locations around the island where you will be able to lunch. Dinner on the beach with feet in the sand and beneath the vastness of a starlight night has been one of the greatest dining experiences that that Marsha and I have enjoyed.
Desroches Island Resort offers a huge range of water sports and activities with a fully equipped PADI diving centre, snorkelling, game fishing, sailing, kayaking etc together with walking & cycling routes, tennis court and the occasional cricket match.
Whether you just need to relax or you have to be active, Desroches Island Resort is undoubtedly the "complete" destination.
Talking with the owners of the Desroches Island Resort it is evident that they are ultra sensitive to the local environment - a large proportion of the islands fresh vegetables are grown on the island utilising recycled water already and the management are pursuing an active sustainability policy.
Great lengths are being taken to ensure that the tranquillity and beauty this island exists without being totally isolated from some of the more active facilities associated with a larger 5 * resort hotel.
